    Roomful of Blues

Roomful of Blues, according to DownBeat magazine, “are in a class by themselves.” With their masterful combination of jumping, horn-heavy, hard-edged blues and R&B, it’s no wonder why the great Count Basie called them “the hottest blues band I’ve ever heard.”

Even though Roomful of Blues’ lineup has changed over the years, the band has always been one of the tightest, most joyful blues ensembles in the world. Currently an eight-piece unit led by guitarist Chris Vachon, the band has never sounded fresher or stronger. In 2010, singer Phil Pemberton took over the vocal duties, bringing his sweet and soulful vocals and adding another bright new dimension to the jazzy, jump-blues musical roots. Their winning combination of jump, swing, blues, R&B and soul remains their calling card, as does their ability to fill the dance floor. Along with newer members, bassist John Turner, trumpeter Doug Woolverton, drummer Chris Rivelli, and keyboardist Rusty Scott, and longtime members baritone and tenor saxophonist Mark Earley, tenor and alto saxophonist Rich Lataille , Roomful keeps on rockin’ in 2015.

Since 1967, the group’s deeply rooted blend of swing, rock ‘n’ roll, jump, blues and soul has earned it five Grammy Award nominations and a slew of other accolades, including seven Blues Music Awards.

With a non-stop performance schedule for over 45 years, Roomful of Blues has earned critical, popular and radio success and a legion of fans around the globe. including the prestigious DownBeat International Critics Poll for  “Best Blues Band”.

Love Letters with Margaret Bush at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre

Love Letters is a beloved play by A.R. Gurney that has been produced numerous times since its debut in 1988. Acclaimed actors such as Kathleen Turner, Christopher Reeve, Mel Gibson, Charlton Heston, Sissy Spacek, Carol Burnett, and Elizabeth Taylor have performed this simple classic; it is an actor favorite due to its limited lines and minimal preparation requirements. Once a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Love Letters features a plot centered on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, childhood friends who remain loyal in their correspondence as life takes them on their own paths. Using the epistolary form sometimes found in novels, they sit side by side at tables and read cards, letters and notes wherein, over the course of 50 years, they discuss their “hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats.”

Actress Margaret Bush, sister-in-law to former 43rd President George W. Bush, will play Melissa. Joining her is special guest James Cowperthwait as Andrew. Margaret Bush is an actress best known for her roles in Still Breathing (1997), Crazy Like a Fox (2004) and Walker, Texas Ranger (1993). Proceeds from Love Letters will benefit the strategic priorities of Maine Medical Center, where Margaret Bush serves on the Board of Trustees.

For those who have followed Brendan James from his 2008 major label debut to his current ranking among today’s top troubadours, the journey has been a pretty remarkable one. His songs have landed spots on over 15 major television shows and feature films and he’s achieved the #1 Singer Songwriter spot on iTunes, multiple times. He has formed relationships with music legends Carly Simon and Cat Stevens, enjoyed on-stage experiences with the likes of John Legend, John Mayer, and Paula Cole, and recently been asked to give a TedTalk on gun violence, love songs, and simpler societies.

Now, after two years of touring in support of his 2012 release, Simplify, James embarks on an altogether new sound. His new EP, The Howl, released in the summer of 2015, is bigger, badder, and dancier than anything he’s attempted to date.

Annie Royer French Cabaret at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre

The French have a word for this wonderful, professional Cabaret Jazz singer and performer. Extraordinaire!

Annie Royer, a native of Paris (France), settled in Boston, Massachusetts, for ten years, and is now resident of Palm Beach, Florida. She has been captivating audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with her musical and dramatic talents and her Gallic charm. Her repertoire ranges from her specialty – soulful and haunting renditions of cabaret songs à la Edith Piaf – to other popular French tunes (Chevalier, Montand, Trenet, Mistinguett, Becaud, Aznavour), and lively performances of Broadway and Jazz favorites. Invariably, listeners of all ages respond with enthusiasm to her invitation for “request songs” in French and English.

Annie Royer’s charismatic style is suited to and engages both, small and large audiences. She is a sought-after entertainer at Jazz Clubs, Concert Stages in Vegas, Miami, DC, New Orleans, and Music Jazz Festivals from Canada to Florida. To name a few Jazz clubs in the Boston area: Scullers, Regattabar, and Ryles. The MFA Boston had invited her for Bastille Day where she performed a sold out, amazing concert to 400 guests. Annie has 2 recorded solo albums, 10 compilations and she is signed with HighNote Records.

Annie is performing all over the United States as well as in many other countries. Her band “Les Garçons Musettes,” all very talented and well known musicians, backs her. Annie performed the show “EDITH PIAF FOREVER” all over the country with grand success. Annie has been singing Edith Piaf for a long time and this show is all about Edith Piaf, her life, her music, her passion, after the tremendous success of “La Mome ” in France and the Oscar winner (best Actress for Marion Cotillard) for “La Vie en Rose”. La Vie en Rose is and will stay forever in our heart. This show brings with it a lot of emotion, drama and professionalism…

My Sinatra at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre

CARY HOFFMAN (Playwright/Actor) is finally achieving his dream with his autobiographical one-man memoir musical, My Sinatra, about his Sinatra obsession, opening Off-Broadway this spring. Ironically, the story is eerily similar to Ray Romano’s Men of a Certain Age, on TNT, of which Hoffman is an Executive Producer; the premise tracks the changing lifestyles and dreams of three 50+ men.

Hoffman has performed the music of Frank Sinatra for the past eight years in over 55 Performing Arts Centers around the World, including a performance for the President of Singapore. He is New York’s premiere Sinatra interpreter. His compelling blend of vocal performance and stories led to a National PBS television special, produced by Albert Tapper, which has aired in over 70 cities around the country and was viewed by more than 2 million people.

Before returning to the stage to sing the great songs of Frank Sinatra, Hoffman was a very successful songwriter/producer, co-writing a hit Off-Broadway musical What’s A Nice Country Like You, Doing in a State Like This with Ira Gasman, co-wrote two top 20 country hits and some of the country’s most well known jingles. As a personal manager, Hoffman discovered the R&B crooner Luther Vandross and the comedy actor Zach Galifianakis. He also manages A-list stand-up comedians such as Lynne Koplitz, co-star with Joan Rivers on We’s hit reality show Joan and Melissa: Mother Knows Best, and TV Writers such as Tom Hertz, creator of CBS’s Rules of Engagement and Mike Royce, creator and executive producer of TNT’s Men of a Certain Age. Hoffman, and his former wife Suzanne, opened Stand-UP NY Comedy Club – a landmark club on the Upper West Side – and ran it for the past 21 years.

Sauce Boss at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre

Florida swamp-funk slide guitarist, Bill Wharton has been a musician for over a half a century. On his 1989 New Years Eve gig, Sauce Boss splashed a bottle of his Liquid Summer Hot Sauce into a huge pot of simmering gumbo, feeding the entire audience. The rest is history. 200,000 bowls later, he’s still feeding the masses for free at his shows. The Sauce Boss show is a soul shouting picnic of bluesy, rock and roll brotherhood.

One morning in the early ‘70s, The Sauce Boss walked out of his house and found a 1933 vintage National Steel guitar in his front yard. That lead him down the Blues path. Deep in the shed, he penned “Let the Big Dog Eat”. That Sauce Boss anthem was just on the top of the Roots Blues Charts for 12 weeks in 2016 with Albert Castiglia’s cover. And the tune is also in Jonathan Demme’s movie “Something Wild”, AND on Jimmy Buffett’s “Late Night Menu at the Margaritaville Cafe” album. AARP’s syndicated TV show, “My Generation” came to St Louis to do a feature story on The Sauce Boss.. NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “Morning Edition” have both covered the Sauce Boss. CNN and EXTRA sent film crews to New York City Sauce Boss extravaganzas, The Food Network’s series “Extreme Cuisine” visited the Sauce Boss on location in New York, and another Food Network series “Keith Famie’s Adventures” filmed a Sauce Boss show in Miami. The Sauce Boss is the only personality that’s been featured in “Living Blues”, “GQ”, AND “Gourmet Magazine”.

The Best of the Second City – August 26th

53 Old Post Road, Arundel, Maine 04046, United States

53 Old Post Road, Arundel, Maine 04046, United States
The Best of the Second City at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre

The Second City opened its doors on a snowy Chicago night in December of 1959. No one could have guessed that this small cabaret theatre would become the most influential and prolific comedy theatre in the world. With its roots in the improvisational games of Viola Spolin, The Second City developed an entirely unique way of creating and performing comedy. Founded by Spolin’s son, Paul Sills, along with Howard Alk and Bernie Sahlins, The Second City was experimental and unconventional in its approach to both theatre and comedy.

At a time when mother-in-law jokes were more the fashion, The Second City railed against the conformist culture with scenes that spoke to a younger generation. The Broadway success of Mike Nichols and Elaine May – members of The Second City’s predecessor, The Compass Players – put attention on the fledgling company. Soon, alumni of The Second City – such as Alan Arkin, Barbara Harris, Robert Klein, David Steinberg and Fred Willard – began to cement the theater’s reputation for developing the finest comedic voices of each and every generation. With the debut of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, populated by Second City Alums John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, and Gilda Radner, the theatre became internationally known for its ever increasing roster of comedy superstars. Soon, Second City’s sister-theater in Canada developed its own sketch comedy series, SCTV, hailed as one of the greatest comedy series of all time and featuring an all-star cast that included Martin Short, Andrea Martin, Catherine O’Hara, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Joe Flaherty and Rick Moranis.

By the 1980’s, The Second City had become much more than a small cabaret theater on Chicago’s north side. In the middle of the decade, The Second City would begin a new era as Second City Toronto proprietors Andrew Alexander and Len Stuart would buy out Bernie Sahlins’ interest in The Second City Chicago and
set in motion a new era of innovation for the company. Today, The Second City continues to produce the premiere comic talent in the industry. From Mike Myers to Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert to Tina Fey – The Second City imprint is felt across every entertainment medium. Additionally,

The Second City has grown well beyond a single stage to become a diversified entertainment company. Second City Training Centers in Chicago, Toronto, and Los Angeles teach thousands of students every week; four touring companies perform Second City revues all over North America and abroad; Second City Communications has become an industry leader in bringing improv based methodologies to the corporate sector; and Second City continues to create unique media in television, film and the digital realm.

The Mallett Brothers at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre

The Mallett Brothers Band’s busy tour schedule over the past seven years has helped them to build a dedicated fanbase across the U.S. and beyond while still calling the state of Maine their home. With a style that can ranges from alt-country to Americana, country, jam and roots rock, theirs is a musical melting pot that’s influenced equally by the singer/songwriter tradition as by harder rock, classic country and psychedelic sounds. Texas Hill Country Explore Magazine calls them “New England’s wildly eclectic crew of genre rebels.” Bill Copeland Music News says “Combining their authentic roots rock sound with a reflective lyrical style that perceives stories on the level of epic myth, it’s like William Faulkner has been resurrected with an electric guitar in hand..”

While remaining fully independent, The Mallett Brothers Band has performed at some of the country’s top venues and festivals, including Austin Texas’s famed Continental Club; Alexandria, Virginia’s Birchmere (sharing the stage with Oklahoma red-dirt rockers The Turnpike Troubadors), New Hampshire’s Meadowbrook Pavilion (opening for The Allman Brothers Band, and again opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd); Nashville’s Bluebird; and Little Rock’s The Rev Room, to name a few. Festival appearances include FloydFest (Virginia), Hop Jam (Vermont), Nateva (Maine), The New England Country Music Festival (New Hampshire), Eastbound Throwdown (New York), and many more.

“The Falling of the Pine,” the band’s most recent release, reimagines a group of 19th Century Maine folk songs collected in the 1927 book “Minstrelsy of Maine.”
